On October 4, 2010, Liliane Dutrait left us. She struggled against her cancer for months and months. She kept hope until the last day for her course, but I think especially for others, for his children, his friends, for me. Associate member of our team, she wanted to be as unobtrusive as possible, often refusing to come to meetings where the company does not have legitimacy to sit. And yet, a graduate in art history and archeology at the University of Provence, a graduate in Chinese from the University of Bordeaux III, it was legitimate to join our team, even if it did not post university. She has owned the map of a journalist for many years, journalist Archeologia , South Impressions, A review of the ceramic and glass , and many others. She has written thousands of articles, or extension, or a high scientific level. The fields covered it impressed me very much: history, archeology, literature, ceramics, ancient Chinese ceramics and contemporary science (I remember popular articles she wrote in the journal I'm interested). Recently, she decided to get rid of the archives and that it had accumulated in his eyes, began to clutter our home. She believed that everything could be accessed on the Internet, no longer need to keep those old papers ... This always struck me was his way of taking all necessary when she was preparing an article. A careful search, making contact and many extreme care in drafting ...
His second career was that of proofreader and editor. She worked for many French and foreign publishers. Some mentioned his name, but it is a practice quite rare. She was in great demand because of its broad powers. Such work for China it was sent because she was unbeatable in the transcription of Chinese pinyin ... As another because of his deep knowledge of ceramics and its manufacture. She even made
rewriting of in the shadow of the authors and has not always received appreciation, yet deserved, for such and such award-winning work. When I told her of my displeasure about this, she was content to fly the big smile that her friends and family he knew well.
When I started in translation, naturally, my first reader, it was her. My manuscript, or rather "typescript" returned to my desk covered with corrections noted in red (it was always a red felt tip fine). After publishing several translations with the word "translated Dutrait by Christmas, but with a front page thanks to Liliane Dutrait, we thought we did well in fact a translation "duet" and it is with The Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian, published in 1995, his name appeared prominently next to mine on the covers. A colleague remarked to me that courtesy would have liked to see written "translated by Lillian and Noel Dutrait ( Ladies first). In reality, this choice was discussed between us. As it was I who was making the transition from Chinese to French (the first jet), and it speaking at the proofreading and correction, we agreed to mention "translated from Chinese by Noel and Liliane Dutrait.
Translate with Liliane, was taking his time, read many times as necessary, never settle for almost, always check the beginning to the end of the novel that everything was consistent: the names of characters, geographic sites, translation of idioms, proverbs, rhymes ... How many times did she do notice that in my "first draft" I had translated a proverb in a way such a page and a Another way to another? It is true that sometimes pressed for time, I did consciously, thinking that we could later make the best choice among the various proposals. How many times did she also pointed out that this sentence does not seem logical given the context, that this character could not appear at this point that the house of a particular character was sometimes east, sometimes west of the village? No error, no missense, nonsense no cons escaped his attention (or if so, the fault lies only to myself). She hesitated not return to the Chinese text to see if she herself does not depart too much from the original text.
course, translate to four hands can lead to heated discussions, objections, arguments even, but in these cases, she could always offer a break, a walk, a stroll in the garden ...
The final reading was always aloud. It was I who was reading on the computer screen and she listened, often with eyes closed. She stopped me each time a text asperity seemed incongruous. And the discussion resumed, often accompanied by a reading of the sentence or page entire Chinese to hear the "music of language."
In general, we did these translations in addition to our own work. But we also happened to decide to spend ten days or more of our holiday to reflect deeply, to be sure to make time to our translation: this was the case Big Breasts Wide Hips by Mo Yan and also Forty and a cannon Mo Yan as well. We were isolated in a house in the country and we translate from early morning until mid afternoon and we walked in the afternoon and evening was devoted to reading, plays music or outputs (never work at night) ... And in the woods, meadows, during our outings, we continue to seek (and often finding) the most accurate translation of a particular sentence, as or that expression.
Liliane was also a big reader of novels, detective stories, French and foreign. Sometimes she would read a phrase translated from Japanese, Icelandic, Finnish ... and gave me an example in relation to a particular passage that we were being translated.
few days before his death, I could show him the latest edition of our joint work, we had dedicated our children, Vincent and Isabelle. It was China and the Chinese appeared in the collection at the Milan Youth Encyclop. It was she who had postponed a few months ago the necessary corrections to the reissue of this popular book first published in 2005. Note that the authors of this book are well Liliane Dutrait and Christmas (and not vice versa as for the translation) because it is she who wrote the majority.
And finally, the last work she has done has been re-reading many texts which form the number 2 of our review IDEO, Impressions of the Far East .
