Those who know me have noticed my affection for books Danielle Elisseeff that I never fail to recommend and to include in my bibliography. This blog also betrayed my taste for his writings on Huang Jialu 黄嘉 略 or Arcade Huang and what Me, arcade, Chinese interpreter of the Sun King. (Arthaud, p. 191) that I often cite as an example of extension ---- sinological quality label that would be hard to give often, the History of China. The roots of this (Rocher, 1997), as, among other , Women at the time of the emperors of China (Stock / Pernoud, 1988) also undoubtedly deserve and, indeed, was duly winning in their time.

Published in 2008, Archaeology and arts. China Néotlithique at the end of the Five Dynasties (960 AD) (Paris: Ecole du Louvre / Reunion des Musees Nationaux Collection "Manuals Ecole du Louvre", 2008, p. xxx), had equally attractive. It is therefore with enthusiasm that I discovered here many weeks already, after this remarkable work: Art History: China, Song (960) at the end of the Empire (1912) (Paris, Ecole du Louvre-Edition Reunion des Musees Nationaux Collection "Manuals Ecole du Louvre", 2010, 382 p.)

It it always finds the same pleasure with the meaning of the phrase and writing accurate and concise as the specialist in Chinese art is so generously in the service of presenting a fascinating period in history. As reported site of the publisher, these books, " extension of education, [...] want to reference books, but also of initiation for any reader interested in understanding or deepen a civilization and its artistic heritage. "We must recognize that the joint attention of the author and the team that has assisted nothing left out, and all four parts of size and different bills, all combine to make this second edition a must-mark over the period. Nothing was missing: the Chinese characters are duly convened that is duplicated more spellings (simplified and traditional), they follow a pinyin transcription terms and an index of Chinese names resumed with great precision.

An exciting narrative history of the period occupied 95 pages with maps, timelines, black and white reproductions, and carefully barred with bibliographical references and web sites selected and properly referenced and it provides the foundation needed to address the following, namely " Analysis of works and sites " in 100 references which give much room for color reproductions of works chosen with sensitivity, that text, always accompanied by references for further exploration ----- I Witness the illustrations in this note, the fruits of consulting the database "Mural Painting Liao " accessible from the Art History & Archaeology Database at Columbia University reported in the notice n 11 ° devoted to the art of Liao 辽 (see pp. 124-125. "Musicians", 大同 Datong (Shanxi). Mural). Part Three, "Between reinvention and reconstruction: Chinese painting has not died with the Empire " (pp. 313-331), raised hopes that a third volume covers the period modern, contemporary, and why not! There! Thanks to Danielle Elisseeff, you now have a key to exploring, or rediscovery, of Chinese art through its brightest manifestations. This manual and the previous are all a sum of erudite references, that inexhaustible source of dreams. Do not deprive yourself as to consult another book that indefatigable intermediary between the Far East and our culture has just published.
